Danville stitch together a bright future

Educator and coordinator of the school's knitting efforts, Amylyn Kyle, said the response not only from the learners of the school, but staff and parents too was heartwarming.

FORMER president Nelson Mandela once said ‘there can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to helping others without expecting anything in return’ and it is a message that has resonated with learners and staff and Danville Park Girls’ High School. The school recently handed over several blankets to the 67 Blankets for Mandela campaign.

The NPO which operates across the country sees volunteers stitch and crochet squares which are then sewn together to make blankets. The blankets will be distributed to those in need to keep them warm this winter.

“Our learners and their families have been fantastic throughout this year. They’ve been knitting and crocheting squares in various colours and patterns which were then sewn into blankets. I think it’s important to use our skills to help the community at large and despite this year’s challenge with the pandemic, our learners have opened their hearts to give back which is heartwarming to see,” Kyle said.

Another integral part of the school’s donations has been security guard, Bonnie Madlala, who herself has knitted and crocheted several squares.

“I’ve done a few in my spare time and it’s a project I get behind every year. It helps keep me busy but more importantly it is about making a difference to those in need. I know many communities where these blankets will help keep people warm. My hope is to see more people get behind the project and give where they can,” she said.
La Lucia resident and ambassador for 67 Blankets for Mandela, Sue Eslick, said she was blown away by the donation.

“This year is that much tougher due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so to see this donation and contribution from Danville is amazing. At this time there is a great need across impoverished communities and we believe this donation will go a long way to helping keep thousands of people across the province warm,” she said.
