Durban North NPO shares #itstartswithme Mandela Day challenge

The #itstartswithme Mandela Day challenge is about honouring Mandela by honouring others.

THE Bhambayi Project (BP) is challenging the north Durban community to take up one of its three Mandela Day challenges, aimed at honouring others. The NPO, which has been running for 14 years, works to enrich the lives of orphans and vulnerable children.

Durban North resident and BP CEO, Mandy Pearson said the #itstartswithme Mandela Day challenge is about honouring Mandela by honouring others.”Mandela’s dream was that everyone would see past the differences and hurt and see the good in others.

“This challenge is all about just that – seeing the good in other people- just like Mandela did – and letting that have a ripple effect in our nation. There are three parts to this challenge: the first part is to honour everyone we think about or encounter on Mandela Day. The second part is to spend 67 minutes reflecting on how you can honour others using the ‘Honour Reflection’ guideline on the Bhambayi web site. The third part is to live on less than R10 for the day and give the amount you save to an organisation that is investing in changing lives. By experiencing what it is like to live on R10 a day, your admiration for the many that do this every day will increase,” she said.

The Honour Reflection offers a step-by-step guide for a structured time of reflection as well as practical ways to ‘be the change.’ Using a rainbow as a metaphor, the guide encourages participants to consider the way they see themselves, people close to them and other people in the world.

“How we choose to see people matters more than what we say or do. I really believe this positive initiative can have a great impact on our country,” she added.

Pearson said 18 schools have committed to the challenge, including Northlands Girls’ High School, Virginia Preparatory School, Northlands Primary School, Reddam House Umhlanga and Clifton School. They are joined by a number of businesses, organisations, churches and individuals.

“We are very excited about our Mandela Day challenge. We already have several Durban North schools involved, as well as a few businesses and churches,” she added.
