Residents upset over uMhlanga Library ‘closure’

Residents urge the municipality to be transparent over the library's future.

RESIDENTS of uMhlanga have voiced their unhappiness over the temporary closure of the uMhlanga Library. In March this year, the eThekwini Municipality announced it would close all libraries to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19).

However, in the case of the uMhlanga Library, previously situated on Chartwell Drive, there has been no pronouncement on where the City intends to reopen the library or when it will be reopened.

It is understood a lease agreement between the City and the owner of the building of Lighthouse Mall, where the library was situated, was not renewed leading to its closure.

Local resident Hilton MacLarty who spoke to Northglen News said the closure was a huge loss to the community.

“The uMhlanga Library is an institution and the area needs one. While I understand the library isn’t closed forever, there has been no announcement on where the new library will be situated. It’s a huge loss to the community because it was used by the elderly, students and tourists in the area. As residents we are asking when and where the City intends to place the new library. We also take into account that all libraries are closed to stop the spread of the virus but as residents we are asking for clarification on what the plans are for a library in uMhlanga,” he said.

Ward councillor, Nicole Bollman, said she had been in contact with senior officials within the eThekwini Municipality about the possible relocation of the uMhlanga Library.

“Libraries are the cornerstones of a community so as residents had mentioned previously, there is a need for one in the uMhlanga area. My biggest concern is where the library will be positioned in terms of location and its accessibility to residents. The uMhlanga Library was extremely popular with tourists and local residents. I’ve written to the head of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department seeking clarity on the matter. It’s crucial the City looks at securing a new premises in the area and being transparent on the matter. Some residents are concerned the library will not reopened,” Bollman said.
