VIDEO-Durban North cosplay king brings Korg to life

Northglen News chats to one of Durban's best cosplayers, Justin Walter on his latest creation.

ONE of the stars of the Marvel Universe, despite his short time on screen, is Korg, a rock like giant creature who befriends Thor in the movie Thor: Ragnarok. Besides being a scene-stealer, Korg’s demeanour and comedic timing ensured the fictional comic book character was a hit with audiences around the world.

Now Durban North resident and cosplayer, Justin Walter, has brought the fictional character to life with his latest creation.

Walter painstakingly spent 150 hours building the outfit using EVA foam. He also built Korg’s weapon and his sidekick and friend, Miek an insectoid warrior. It’s not the first character he has brought to life. The 36-year-old has brought to life several characters including Groot (Guardians of the Galaxy), Batman, Arthas Menethil (World of Warcraft) and Maui (Moana).

Korg and Miek.

“As a character, I love Korg, he is awesome and just so funny and he is a firm fan favourite so I was so excited to unveil him this year at Comic Con Cape Town. Unfortunately the coronavirus pandemic has put a dampener on things so I had to unveil the Korg costume in stages on my Instagram account. I think with his appearance, the rock like texture of his skin was the toughest thing to recreate. I had to cut hundreds of pieces of foam offcuts to painstakingly create that almost rock like effect.

“While I was disappointed at not being able to unveil him at this year’s comic con I was really pleased with how the outfit turned out in the end. People absolutely loved the outfit, especially that I created his weapon and a foam version of Miek. The reactions made it all worth it. Getting praise from fans of the game was fantastic because you know you’ve created a costume as accurately as possible, which is a huge achievement in the cosplay world,” he said.

Walter who has made an impact at Comic Con Africa gone by, hopes to do the same with next year’s Comic Con Africa event.

“Last year I was awarded first place in the armour division for my Arthas creation and my goal is to win the masters category at the event. I’ve already begun working on my next creation and I hope it’s going to blow everyone away. It is also a character from World of Warcraft so I hope it will make an impact next year,” he said.

Walter has made a number of costumes in the last few years-check out our gallery below to view more.
