LISTEN-Environmental trail walk to celebrate KZN coast set to start this month

The Philocaly Trail ('Philocaly' meaning The Love of Beauty) will see participants walk along from Mtunzini to Sheffield Beach in five days.

LOCAL resident Nikki Williamson is hoping to emulate the success of last year’s inaugural Philocaly Trail along the KZN north coast which aimed to raise awareness and funds for marine conservation.

The Philocaly Trail (‘Philocaly’ meaning The Love of Beauty) will see participants walk along from Mtunzini to Sheffield Beach in five days (29 July to 2 August) while also raising funds for two organisations championing the environment.

Last year participants raised R60 000 with the proceeds shared between Wild Oceans and Breathe Conservation.

“The idea has always been to explore and appreciate the beauty of the KZN coastline has to offer. The charitable aspect grew out of the respect of someone who knows the incredible work Wild Oceans and Breathe Conservation are involved in. In last year’s walk we trekked from the Durban beachfront to Mtunzini but this year we’ve decided to start further along the KZN north coast.

While walking along the beach was still prohibited under level 3, Williamson said she hoped a pronouncement on regulation changes would be made soon.

“If we get to the point where the regulations disallow walking along the beach then we will postpone the walk. We will publish a notification on our Facebook page and participants would have the option to defer money or refund. Since we’ve opened the entries for the 2020 version of the Philocaly Trail we’ve had already gotten two thirds of the entries from last year so this year we are hoping double the amount raised last year,” she said.
