New leadership for Durban North College

The La Lucia resident had only begun his tenure at DNC when the nationwide lockdown was announced.

DURBAN North College’s (DNC) newly appointed principal, Alan Norton has described his appointment as a ‘great honour’. Norton, who spent 30 years of his teaching career at Durban High School (DHS) also served as deputy principal of the school before being named as Maryna Höbel’s successor.

The La Lucia resident had only begun his tenure at DNC when the nationwide lockdown was announced.

“It has certainly been a challenge especially from an organisational standpoint but I believe it is times like there that help you grow as a leader. I’ve received tremendous support from the school governing body, the staff and the learners which has been heartwarming and which has made the transition easier.

“The biggest adjustment for me so far has been dealing with so many more Grades.  I’m still finding my feet in the position but I’m motivated and ready for the challenges that lie ahead,” he said.

Norton said his vision for the school was to grow its reputation and to make it one of the top high schools in the area.

“Durban North College has a wonderful reputation of academic, cultural and sporting excellence and it’s a great honour and privilege to lead such a prestigious school. There is always room for improvement and my goal is to grow the school’s reputation and continue fostering academic excellence. The governing body and I have the common goals of making Durban North College one of the top co-ed high schools in KZN,” he said.
