City of Durban releases plan to manage port congestion

THE eThekwini Municipality will address congestion in the Port of Durban through their Integrated Freight and Logistics Strategic Framework and Action Plan (IFLAP).

In a statement, the municipality said the number of vessel arrivals and value of cargo make Durban’s port the busiest port in Africa, comprising of more than 20 per cent of Durban’s GDP.

According to eThekwini Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda government interventions will see Metro Police permanently stationed at the intersection of Bayhead and Langeberg roads to manage traffic congestion.

“Road maintenance on Bayhead Road, Khangela Bridge, Sydney Road and Umbilo Road have been carried out, including the recent painting of road markings. Pier two terminal in the Port has recently implemented the truck booking system and Transnet Freight Rail is at an advanced stage of planning to bring back rail services to the Bulk Terminals at Island View Precinct,” he said.

Kaunda added the IFLAP includes several stages, including the expansion of additional lanes on the M7/ Solomon Mahlangu Drive.

Government will also be working jointly with Transnet National Port Authority in developing additional road capacity in and out of the Port of Durban.

Provincial government will also be working jointly with South African National Roads Agency and the Cato Ridge Logistics Hub Consortium to develop the Cato Ridge Intermodal Hub that will move certain cargo out of the Port to Cato Ridge, further decongesting the South Durban Basin.
