Mount Moriah youth give back

For these Mount Moriah youth, Youth Day is about how they can give back to their elders who fought for their freedom.

FIVE Mount Moriah youth banded together to start community organisation, Sinikuthando Community Welfare (SCW) which aims to help the elderly and orphans in their community and beyond.

Founding members of SWC are Nxolo Ngcobo, Londiwe Langa, Nonhlanhla Mkhwanazi, Nokwazi Zulu and Londiwe Mathe.

“We saw that old people were struggling, so we came up with this idea so that the elderly will have someone to look after them. Our elders fought for our freedom, now it is our time to give back,” said Ngcobo.

Some SWC members returned to their homes in Pongola during lockdown. They continued their work in that community and were able to secure a building to use as an old age home. The team hope to find a similar building in Durban to assist the elderly in the Mount Moriah and KwaMashu community, said Langa.

“Our aim is to build an old age home and orphanage. We are focusing on an old age home for now. We have been trying to raise funds for renovation since we have already been given an old school building to use for a home,” added Langa.

The team is passionate about helping others from all areas, not just their own community, said Mkhwanazi.

“We aim to help everyone, not just those in Mount Moriah. As we are living in this community, we see how everyone is treated. We see how the elderly are living. When they get their grant money, all they do is look after their grandchildren. They can’t look after themselves,” she added.

During lockdown, SWC has extended their reach to organise food parcels.

“We are looking for sponsors for food parcels. We have been applying at various stores. We currently have five sponsors. We have also been applying for sponsorship for clothes and toys for children,” said Langa.
