Kim puts her best foot forward for Bright Eyes

The Durban North resident dedicated her run to raising funds for Bright Eyes Centre (BEC) for Visually Impaired Children.

DURBAN North resident, Kim Jackson, was among thousands of runners who took on the ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ virtual event, on Sunday, the day the Comrades Marathon was scheduled to have taken place. In what would have been Jackson’s 25th Comrades, the local runner with the permanent number 19102, decided to dedicate her run to a special cause, raising funds for Bright Eyes Centre (BEC) for Visually Impaired Children.

Starting in Pietermaritzburg, Jackson ran the entire distance of the Comrades route and then ended her ultimate human race at the school based in the Musgrave area.

Incredibly Jackson was able to raise more than R20 000 and hopes residents will continue to add to that number in the coming weeks.

“I’ve never dedicated my run to a cause and at the end of last year I had decided that I wanted to do my 25th Comrades for the school. I only found out about the school last year as my friends from the church I go to (His Fellowship) asked me to come along to a Christmas concert hosted by BEC. I was so blown away and touched by the concert that I made up my mind to run my race and raise funds,” she said.

Speaking on the gruelling run, Jackson said: “It was tough. I hadn’t done a lot of the long runs needed before the Comrades. When you take on this race you need to stress your body and I was working in the hope that the marathon would be staged in September. Nevertheless I’m ecstatic to have completed the run and the reception from the school and my friends at the end made it all worth it. They even made me my own medal. I’m just so blessed that I was able to do something today to change someone’s tomorrow,” she said.
