Northwood School staff give bags full of compassion

The collection and donation was initiated by school principal, Paul Viljoen, who was visiting the Mount Royal Combined School.

MEMBERS of Northwood School’s staff recently gave back to the community of Mount Royal by donating 650 food parcels and treat hampers.

The collection and donation was initiated by school principal, Paul Viljoen, who was visiting the Mount Royal Combined School.

The school, supported by Rivers Church, recently donated the parcels and hampers to the community.

“When I was at the school, I noticed a number of small children and grannies sitting around the school. When I asked what was going on I was told that they were sitting around hoping the municipal truck would arrive with soup and bread, which would be their only meal for the day.

“This spoke to my heart and it immediately became apparent that we needed to put a smile on their faces. I shared the story with a number of members of Northwood staff and we all agreed that we would all contribute towards the assistance of the community,” he explained.

Within days the school and the church had united to put together 650 food parcels and treat hampers.

“Rivers Church have been absolutely incredible in their support of this cause. I feel this nationwide lockdown has taught us that we have a bigger responsibility to love, care and support each other. I also want to thank the staff and learners at the school who have shown incredible generosity. I am so incredibly proud of them and they have all lived their Northwood values of being kind, caring and generous,” he said.

Viljoen added he is hoping to involve other schools in the area in giving back to the community of Mount Royal.
