Relief for taxpayers in June, says City of Durban

The incentive offers once-off relief for the the month of June.

THE eThekwini Municipality is offering a Special Payment Relief incentive to all ratepayers impacted by the nation wide Covid-19 lockdown.

The incentive is a once-off relief plan for the period from 1 June to 30 June.

This follows a rates rebate for B&B establishments and Guesthouses which dropped to a residential rate recently.

The incentive allows for all customers who are in arrears to enter into a credit agreement with the Municipality.

This is on condition that the owing customer pays 50 per cent of the arrears (excluding interest) on or before 30 June.

While the special relief only applies to debt that is 90 days and older,  the total interest accumulated will be reversed.

“Should a customer default on the payment plan with the Municipality, all interest written-off under the conditions of Covid-19 Special Payment Relief will be reinstated and the total debt (including interest) will be due for collection,” said the Municipality.

Outstanding debt can be paid back over a maximum period of 24 months.  There will be no interest raised during the period of the payment plan agreement.
