More than 300 000 KZN learners to head back to school

The province is home to 151000 matric learners and  210 190 Grade 7 learners as well as 90057 teachers and support staff.

AS restrictions ease under level 3 lockdown 357 846 Grade 7 and 12 learners are expected to return to schools across KwaZulu-Natal on Monday, 1 June. This according to KZN Premier,  Sihle Zikalala who was speaking during a media briefing recently.

“KwaZulu-Natal is currently the biggest education system of all provinces in the country.  We have the highest number of Grade 12 compared to any province and highest number of learners across all grades,” said Zikalala.

The province is home to 151000 matric learners and  210 190 Grade 7 learners as well as 90057 teachers and support staff. On Monday the KZN Provincial Education Department postponed the return of School Management Teams and teachers to Thursday, 28 May due to a delay in personal protective equipment (PPE) deliveries.

PPE forms part the stringent hygiene and social distancing requirements that govern schools amidst the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak.

“In KZN over 6000 schools will be opened in this phase.  Most of our schools have since been decontaminated.  The cleaning and disinfection is being coordinated through districts. Classroom cleanliness will be done twice a day in the morning and afternoon,” said Zikalala.

As May/ June matric exams are postponed, the Department of Basic Education is to announce details regarding the merged June and November examination.

The Covid-19 outbreak saw learners across the country miss more than two months of classroom time over March, April and May.
