GALLERY: Local photographer captures the moment

Once a month, the newspaper will be interviewing amateur, budding and professional photographers to gain an insight into why they do what they do.

THE Northglen News’ ‘Photo of the Week’ feature has been a hit with the north Durban community. Each week we call on our readers, both young and old, to send through photos they’ve taken that stand out for them. The photos could be of nature, flowers or just breathtaking scenery. You don’t have to be a professional to feature in the paper. As an extension of that feature, once a month, the newspaper will be interviewing amateur, budding and professional photographers to gain an insight into why they do what they do.

This week features local resident, Steve Heuer.

Q1: Among your photos, which one is your favorite and why?

“I don’t have any particular favourite photograph, but I must say my favorites will probably be one of my butterfly pics, the reason being that you have to be so quick to get the shot as they move around so quickly.”

Q2: What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?

“Just go out there and take pictures. Don’t be scared to change to manual settings, the more you experiment the better you will get at it. Also learn how to get a great shot using your aperture, speed and you ISO settings (which measures your camera’s sensitivity to light).”

Q3: Are you the type of photographer who sticks to one brand and does one need fancy equipment to shoot a great shot?

“I have always used Nikon, just a personal preference. You don’t always need fancy equipment to get a great shot, but i suppose in the long run it does help. I have seen some great results with the Nikon kit lens and even with some cell phones nowadays.”

Q4: For you, what is the best part about taking photos and why do you enjoy taking them?

“To capture the beauty around us and create your own art through the lens. I really enjoy all types of photography, wildlife, birds and sports being my favourites.”

Q5: What motivates you to continue taking pictures?

“To get that one good shot that captures the moment the more you do it, the more you learn and the better you get at it.”

Q6: What technology/software/camera gear do you use to keep focused on what you do best, as you photograph?

“My Nikon camera gear, tripod and monopod when shooting with a telephoto lens to avoid camera shake. I use Lightroom Classic to process my raw images on the computer.”

Q7: What makes a good photograph?

“A photograph that captures the moment.”

Q8: What advice would you give to an amateur photographer wanting to change their passion into a full-time profession? Do they need fancy equipment?

“Just go out there and do it, good equipment does help but you can build up slowly.”
