Durban residents left in the dark about electricity tokens

The system is down as a damaged cable is being repaired.

THE eThekwini Municipality has left residents in the dark with the announcement that the system for purchasing electricity tokens is offline.

The message was shared in a Facebook post on the municipality’s page which explained that repairs were underway.

“This is due to a cable damage on the network and our technicians are working on it. We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” read the post.

According to the municipality’s website, a prepayment electricity token is issued once a meter token has been purchased from one of 600 vendors within the municipality.

Once the 20 digit number on the token has been entered, via the keypad on the meter, a scrolling credit wedge is displayed.

This display will update automatically to show the remaining credit on the meter.
