NPO and Round Table uplift underprivileged with food hampers

Local ministry and Round Table appeal for help to support various informal settlements in the north Durban area.

THE Umhlanga Round Table No 155 has partnered with local based NPO, Matthew 25:35 Outreach Programme to help communities across the province affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Yvonne Halley of the ministry, prior to the lockdown they were supporting various other organisations but since the nationwide lockdown was announced, their objective was now to assist the City and communities adversely affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our ministry operates from Glenashley and Ballito and thanks to the support from the community we have been supporting the Malacca Road Informal Settlement, the Briardene Informal Settlement, a settlement in Cornubia and a soup kitchen in Hillary. This lockdown we’ve seen the community come together and we are again appealing to anyone who can help to donate non-perishable food items. We have vehicles and permits and are willing to collect.

“We also have a basket set-up at participating stores which includes, SPAR uMhlanga, Pick N Pay uMhlanga and Pick N Pay La Lucia and Woolworths Shakaskraal. We are bouyed by the support especially from the Round Table who are now helping us feed the poor and those in need,” Halley said.

Chris Swartz of the Umhlanga Round Table said they were only too happy to contribute to the cause.

“I know Yvonne from Church so when I heard about the outreach programme I spoke to the guys at Round Table. They are always looking for local causes to champion and they were only too happy to get involved. We are also urging the community to get behind our Winter Knights initiative. With their support we aim to relieve the effects of the cold this winter by collecting donations in aid of those less fortunate in the form of clothes, blankets, non-perishable food items and cash donations. This is about bringing warmth to those in need,” Swartz said.

If you would like to support either of the causes, contact Chris Swartz on 082 924 1808 (Winter Knights initiative) or Yvonne Halley on 074 729 1686 (Matthew 25:35 Outreach Programme).
