Durban North organisations band together to feed the hungry

Produce was sourced from a range of suppliers and farmers in KwaZulu-Natal.

THE Durban North Methodist Church Hall was stocked with fresh produce as donations toward food hampers were delivered recently. Durban North resident and founder of Waste Action Tribe, Lindsay Hopkins said the donations would be used to make food hampers for those in need. Hopkins is working as a member of the C-19 People’s Coalition, which formed recently to address social issues around the Covid-19 outbreak.

The produce was sourced from a range of suppliers and farmers in KwaZulu-Natal, she said.

“The meilies, I’m buying at cost from a farmer in Eston. He’s used to selling 3000 dozen a day to traders in informal sectors and now he’s only selling 400 dozen a day, so he has tasked me with feeding the informal traders because they keep his business afloat,” said Hopkins.

“The fruit and vegetable donations come from Clint Govender – he’s usually at the Golden Hours Market. On the weeks where he can, he gives me free sweet potatoes. I also source cucumbers from a farmer down the coast and they are free because they are third grade,” added Hopkins.

Donations had also come from Unilever said Danielle Venter who is a Unilever Regional Customer Chef and chef at Hingham Nursery.

“We are calling on our suppliers to donate food and hygiene products. We are also calling on the community to contribute to the cause. Any small donation will help, even if its just a 2kg bag of rice,” she said.
Donations of dog food and sanitary pads would also help, added Venter.
