uMhlanga couple revel at virtual music festival

Over the three days a selection of live music, streamed from each musician's home or private studio, was available for those attending.

SPLASHY Fen fans had the time of their lives after Impi Concept Events created a free virtual festival for Splashy diehards. The event called Lockdown Live, was a three-day virtual Splashy Fen Music Festival which fans watched online from the comfort of their homes or out in their gardens camping.

Over the three days a selection of live music, streamed from each musician’s home or private studio, was available for those attending.

For uMhlanga couple, Nick and Shelley Ferreira, the virtual festival was one to remember.

“I have been to a total of nine Splashy Fens but nothing like this. The Splashy Fen Lockdown Live was so good, it brought together some of the best parts of Splashy, mainly being the live music and sense of community. It gave us a whole weekend to look forward to. Seeing all the amazing home camp sites was really inspiring,” he explained.

Ferreira who camped out with his wife in their back garden said the experience was worth it

“We pitched our tent on Thursday and slept in the garden the whole weekend, braaiing every night, trying to keep the Splashy vibe going, hearing our neighbours clapping and singing the national anthem in solidarity. If you closed your eyes it almost felt like you were on Splashy Fen farm in Underberg. We loved it, it was honestly such a nice break and we’ll probably do it again soon,” he said.

Besides music, there was also yoga classes and workouts on offer which Nick felt added to the atmosphere.

“Shelley participated in the yoga sessions and we did do some running around our house for the workouts. We also really enjoyed the cooking segments. The best thing about camping out was the subtle break from our routine. Doing something different, keeping us active and healthy, in body and in spirit,” he said.

He added that virtual concerts could be the way forward in times like this.

“I definitely feel like this will pave the way for more online shows, concerts and festivals. To name a few, Schalk Bezuidenhout local comedian has been hosting online shows and Ard Matthews has been doing an amazing job doing live shows, raising money for charity. In this crazy time these events bring us closer together as humans. They remind us that we are not alone,” he said.
