Durban North resident discovers DNA, history and heritage with reality TV show

Among the four strangers taking the DNA journey with Jason McCall is radio deejay, Minnie Ntuli.

DELVE into the mysterious world of DNA as DSTV’s History Chanel launches a brand new reality TV series that stars Durban North resident, Jason McCall (35) along with three other South Africans. The show, Your People, My People debuts on Sunday, 19 April at 8.15 pm on channel 186.

The shows follows the four strangers as they take DNA tests to discover in-depth knowledge about their heritage and ancestry.
“I was called up by the show’s producers and had to audition. After hearing about the concept I was intrigued and because I love my country and history I was immediately interested. I am also very curious about my background as I knew very little about it,” said McCall.

While he is no stranger to the camera having worked as a TV presenter for the show, Trace Sports, McCall said the show pushed him out of his comfort zone emotionally.
“I wanted to discover my background and history and my roots in the world – and yes you could say that expectations were met,” he added.

While the show centers around a DNA test, McCall discovered that one’s social climate plays a role in shaping who they are.
“DNA defines us to a certain extent but I firmly believe (and it is clear in the show) that the person who raises us and how we are raised makes a difference,” he said.

McCall hopes the show will help to build the nation and encourage locals to embrace what makes South Africa unique.

“At the very least it will make those who still hold prejudices think a little deeper before making a judgement. It’s going to leave viewers with eyes open and jaws dropped, that I can assure you,” he said.

McCall said a South African mindset is one that values diversity.
“The differences are what make us unique and special, as people and as a country. The show revealed how special those three other people are- they are powerful, unique and so important to me, and the world,” he added.

Among the four strangers taking the DNA journey with McCall is radio deejay, Minnie Ntuli. The show sees participants re-enact historical events from the lives of their relatives- such as the 1838 Battle Of Blood River.
