Seven suspects nabbed with stolen liquor in Briardene

The suspects were traced to a nearby informal settlement where police recovered stolen good including alcohol.

SEVEN men were arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning after forcing entry and stealing alcohol from a tavern on Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road).

According to KZN provincial SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker, four suspects held up the security guard outside the tavern near Briardene.

“They forced the security officer into the guard room where he was bound. They then proceeded to cut the burglar bars to gain entry into the premises. The suspects stole two flat screen TV sets and alcohol from the premises. Thereafter they fled on foot into a nearby informal settlement.

“Police officers searched the area and spotted the men consuming liquor in the informal settlement. Following further investigation they directed police officers to a house where some of the stolen property was found hidden. Police seized liquor and other items found in the suspects possession,” he said.

The suspects, aged between 23 and 60 were placed under arrest for robbery.

“More arrests can be expected as police investigations unfold. The suspects will also be profiled to establish if they are linked to other robberies in the province. The men are expected to appear at the Durban Magistrates Court on Thursday,” he said.

Last week, police arrested a Durban North woman for selling alcohol from her home in Durban North. Around R50 000 worth of alcohol was seized in the intelligence driven operation.
