VIDEO: Jason Arnold rescues green mamba from eMdloti

FROM October to the end of May there is little rest for Sunningdale’s snake man, Jason Arnold. Northglen News recently caught up with the 41-year-old who has a busy lockdown with a number of call-outs for various venomous and non-venomous snake species including green mambas, leguaans and night adders.

Last week Arnold rescued a green mamba from eMdloti and had an eventful Easter Sunday rescuing a Nile Monitor lizard from a home in Glen Anil. Speaking on the peak in snake activity, Arnold said most snakes were on the move due to winter fast approaching.

Then on Easter Sunday morning a Glen Anil family awoke to find a large Nile Monitor lizard in their pool.

“They heard a small splash in their pool and thought their cat had fallen in. When they went to investigate, they discovered this large water Leguaan (see below) swimming around happily. Not wanting dogs or cats to get hold of the lizard once it climbed out the pool, they called me to safely catch and relocate the beautiful animal to a more suitable area,” he said.

Arnold said the best way not to get bitten by a snake was not to interfere with it. Snakes only become scared and defensive when they are put in a position where they feel their life is being threatened.

This night adder was rescued in Mount Edgecombe last week.
