Greenwood Park robbery suspects arrested in shootout

South African Police Services Durban K9 Unit and the Provincial Task Team conducted an extensive search of the area to locate the suspects.

BULLETS flew as one suspect was shot dead and two more were arrested after a convenience store in Park Station Road, Greenwood Park, called for help during an armed robbery at about 7.50pm on Wednesday night.

The suspects were part of a gang of robbers – their accomplices remain at large.

Spokesperson for Marshall Security, Kyle Van Reenen said they dispatched multiple armed response and special operations units after receiving multiple panic activations from the convenience store.

“On arrival of our officers, a group of suspects were seen fleeing the scene and multiple shots were fired at our team, as the suspects fled on foot in an attempt to evade arrest. One suspect was arrested on Celtic Road while another was chased and apprehended on Workington Grove,” said Van Reenen.

The assistance of the South African Police Services Durban K9 Unit and the Provincial Task Team was called for and an extensive search of the area was conducted, with a suspect being tracked by the K9 officer to a nearby property, said Van Reenen.

“In an attempt to evade arrest the suspect produced a firearm and was shot and killed by members of the SAPS. A third suspect was apprehended by members of the public later on  at the convenience store,” he said.

The suspects were found in possession of cash and other items confirmed to have been taken in the robbery.

“It is believed the suspects are linked to a spate of robberies in the area lately, including an armed robbery of the same business premises last week,” said Van Reenen.

The scene was secured and handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation and processing.
