No dog-walking or jogging during lockdown says police minister

Residents are only permitted to walk their dogs around their homes said Cele.

POLICE Minister Bheki Cele said there will be no dog-walking or jogging during the 21-day lockdown.

Cele made the announcement as members of the justice, crime prevention and security cluster briefed the media on Wednesday evening on their plans during the nationwide lockdown starting on Friday.

Cele warned that failure to adhere to regulations during the lockdown period will be punished.

“There shall be no dogs that shall be walked. The cluster met, discussed and we agreed it doesn’t enhance the call made by the president. If you really want to walk your dog around your house, it ends there, it can’t go beyond that,” he said.

His announcement comes after Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said people would be able to walk their dogs and take brief jogs during the 21-day period on Wednesday.

The stringent regulations are among a range of prohibitons during this period as South Africa’s Covid-19 cases increased to 709 confirmed positive cases.

Cele added there would be no alcohol sold during the lockdown.

“The Disaster [Management] Act says the movement of alcohol shall be limited, there shall be no movement of alcohol (during lockdown), that’s illegal. What you have at home, you consume it there at home, not next door.”

Cele also warned that on-consumption premises where alcohol is sold – shebeens, shisanyamas and taverns – are to remain closed.

“This time we are not buying liquor between 9am and 6pm; you shall buy no liquor. I’m sure that makes life easier for all of us.”

He warned that off-consumption outlets that will continue to sell liquor during that lockdown, will be dealt with.
