A COUPLE were robbed of their valuables at knifepoint on Riverside Road on Tuesday night.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the incident occurred at about 8.20pm.

“The victim was walking along Riverside Road (near the Athlone Bridge) with his girlfriend when two suspects approached them. One of the suspects pulled out an Okapi knife while the second threatened to shoot the victims if they didn’t hand over their valuables.

“The victims then handed over their cell phones and the suspects also took cash amounting to R390 between the two victims. The suspects fled on foot and are still at large,” he said.

Deokaran added there had been more than 15 cases since July last year all involving armed robberies of pedestrians.

“The suspects normally target lone pedestrians late at night or in the early hours of the morning. We are urging pedestrians, residents and visitors where possible, to walk in large groups. We will continue to work with security companies and implement our own strategies to combat this crime and we are confident arrests will be made going forward,” he said.
