Finch breeders to flock to bird show

The show, which will feature hundreds of finches, is free to the public.

DURBAN North resident, Heather Hensman is looking forward to the Durban Finch Breeders (DFB) sixth Annual Bird Show on Saturday, 21 March. The show is free to the public and takes place from 11am until 4pm at the VC Hall at the Flame Lily Moth Retirement Village.

The show aims to encourage community members to take up finch breeding.

“We are keen to encourage people to become breeders so as to keep finch populations going in South Africa. Most of these birds originate in Australia,” she said.

While she does not breed finches, Hensman joined DFB to learn more about how to take care of birds.

“I’ve always been a bird person. They just fascinate me, they are very pretty and I like being able to care for them. I have inside birds. To breed finches, you need a big place, an aviary and I don’t have much space,” she explained.

She encouraged the community to support the show.

“There will be around 600 entries and different varieties of finches will be on display. All the breeders will be there as well to share information, so its quite a good opportunity to learn from people who know what they are doing,” she said.
