Durban North learners test negative after Coronavirus scare

The Department of Education confirmed that the learners had tested negative.

THE Department of Education has called on the community not to panic after it was revealed that the parents of two Chelsea Preparatory School learners had been in contact with the man who tested positive for the Coronavirus (Covid-19) last week.

Muzi Mahlambi, head of communications for the department, said the children who were tested by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases have tested negative for the deadly virus.

“The Department of Health have a protocol of quarantine and tracing patients and they are the ones who then confirmed whether people are testing positive or negative,” he said.

Mahlambi explained that the school had issued a letter to parents simply to quell panic and set the record straight.

“It is important that people do not spread fake news which causes unnecessary panic in our communities,” he said.

Community members are urged to stay calm and practice good hygiene.

“We are told that washing hands regularly is the main defensive line that all of us should be embarking on,” said Mahlambi.

Dr Enock Nzama, head of the Department of Education is scheduled to visit Chelsea Preparatory School tomorrow.
