Chained vervet monkey , north of Durban rescued by SPCA

The monkey was being kept as a pet with a short chain, around the waist.

IT was a victory for the Durban & Coast SPCA, when a young vervet monkey was rescued and  sent to a rehabilitation center recently. The SPCA shared the news on their Facebook page this week after an SPCA inspector responded to a report of a monkey being chained and kept as a pet on a property in Ntuzuma.

“Upon investigation he found that a young vervet monkey was indeed being kept chained, on a short chain, around the waist. A written warning was issued and the matter was also brought to the attention of KZN Wildlife as the keeping of an indigenous animal is illegal without the necessary permit,” read the post.

While the monkey was released by the owner during the inspection, the SPCA said it didn’t go far.

“(The monkey) was subsequently handed over by the owner to another person in the Inanda area, after receiving a warning from KZN Wildlife,” they said.

The monkey was located and transferred to a safe place.

“Our inspector located the vervet again and this time he was signed over to the SPCA before being transferred to an accredited wildlife rehabilitation center,” read the post.

“Thank you to all our supporters who help make happy endings like these possible. We care for all animals and would not be able to do the very important work we do without your support,” said the SPCA.
