8 tips and tricks to help you handle load shedding

Eskom has announced that they don't expect load shedding today but there is a possibility of it being implemented.

ESKOM recently announced that there is an increased probability that load shedding would be implemented today.

Although the power utility company said they don’t expect to implement rotational load shedding today, the possibility still remains.

Eskom released a media statement saying, “We remind customers that the possibility that loadshedding may be implemented remains. We are utilising emergency reserves to supplement supply as some generation units have been taken out for emergency repairs. As such, the system remains constrained, vulnerable and unpredictable. We request customers to continue using electricity sparingly to help curb demand.”

With that in mind, here are some handy tricks to make your load shedding experience bearable:

1. Download EskomSePush:

Keep track of the load shedding schedule with this handy mobile application. You can choose to monitor several zones. The app can also send you alerts and notifications, so that you can stay up-to-date with schedule changes, stage changes and suspensions.

2. Protect your appliances:

It is important to note that while load shedding is in effect, there is no current running through the wires that power your appliances.

So, when the power comes back on, the surge of electricity won’t cause major damage by frying your cables.

Invest in a few power surge protectors,  or simply unplug your appliances during load shedding.

3. Stay connected

Keep your phone and/ or laptop charged or purchase a power bank, so that your electronic devices never run flat.

4. Sort out supper without a fuss

Not being able to cook is without a doubt one of load shedding’s biggest inconveniences. A gas stove or braai will lessen the need to go and buy take-aways.

This will also allow you to make some tea and coffee to calm the load shedding nerves.

An alternative would be to boil some water and keep it in a thermos flask.

Keeping a stock of easy to make food, and snacks or preparing the food in advance is also essential.

5. Keep your home secured

If your home has an electrically operated gate, garage door or alarm system, make sure you have back-up batteries.

Most alarm systems have reserve batteries for cases like this.

6. Protect your perishable food

Avoid opening the fridge and freezer as much as possible – this will keep your food colder for longer.

Another handy tip is to freeze water in plastic bottles or tubs, and leaving the frozen items in your fridge to keep your food cold.

7. Let there be light

Candles, portable LED lights, gas lamps, and torches will ensure that you don’t get caught in the dark.

Just keep a fire extinguisher nearby and teach your children about fire safety.

8. Entertain yourself:

Load shedding comes with a lot of boredom, so instead of sleeping, there are plenty of ways to keep yourself busy.

Dust off the board games! Nothing kills time better than board games such as 30 seconds and Monopoly, card games come in handy too.
