Solution sought for Kenville Road closure

The project was due for completion in May last year but contractors ran into various problems including the reinforcement of one of the banks.

KENVILLE residents have urged the City to complete a bridge from Inanda Road to Kenville Road in order to ease traffic congestion on the road. In 2018, the City announced that Kenville Road would be closed (for a year) as work was being carried out to realign Inanda Road to ease traffic congestion.

The project was due for completion in May last year but contractors ran into various problems including the reinforcement of one of the banks. The project’s deadline was then moved to October last year, however, that deadline has now moved with work set to only be completed in October 2020.

The news has concerned residents, parents and learners at the Habibia Soofie Saheb Badsha Peer (HSBP) Institute of Learning and those using the Soofie Saheb Badsha Peer Masjid for daily prayers and functions who say they have been adversely affected by the road closure.

Residents have suggested contractors complete a bridge linking Inanda Road to Kenville Road which would help traffic problems.

When Northglen News visited the site last week, construction work had come to a standstill. It is believed a lack of funding for the project has led to the halt in construction.

Principal of the Sundrum Subramoney HSBP Institute of Learning situated on Kenville Road said staff, learners and parents have been affected.

“There are several facets where the closure of Kenville Road has affected the school. The drop-off and pick-up of learners from the school is incredibly challenging as parents driving down Kenville Road are forced to make a u-turn at the mosque entrance gate. The reality is with so many vehicles utilising the narrow stretch of road at peak times it causes a problem leading to congestion.

Ward councillor Bobby Maharajh, said he understood completely the frustrations felt by residents over the more than a year long closure of Kenville Road.

“My staff have also been affected by the closure having to use Queen Nandi Drive to get into Kenville which also delays them getting to school timeously. It has also had a negative effect on admissions with the school with parents citing the roundabout way to get to the school affecting their morning commute to work.

“As a school, we’ve taken the decision to build a drive-through, so parents are able to driver around the mosque and exit without causing any congestion. This is still currently under construction. What the school, residents and musaleehs (those who pray at the mosque) are asking, is for the construction company to complete the bridge linking Kenville Road to Inanda Road. Part of the bridge has been completed with one last concrete section needing to be stitched to Kenville Road,” Subramoney explained.
