VIDEO: Public urged to heed M4 construction site rules

According to Nicole Bollman, unauthorised people, particularly cyclists, are not allowed to walk through the construction site.

LOCAL ward councillor, Nicole Bollman, has urged pedestrians, motorists and particularly cyclists to avoid walking through the construction site on the M4 Ruth First Highway.

The highway has been out of commission since last year when a partial road collapse caused the closure of the route between uMhlanga and Sibaya.

Local company, Devru Construction, who have been tasked to carry out the backfill and repair work on the damaged section of the M4 have erected a fence (on the uMhlanga side) with a disclaimer warning unauthorised people they were not allowed to be there.

While the company have put up a barrier on the north side, Bollman said a number of people, particularly cyclists were cycling past the barriers and walking into the construction.

In the video below, Bollman urges those using the M4 to respect the construction site for their own safety.

“I’ve been told by the construction company that cyclists, coming from the Sibaya side, ride up to slip point, walk down with their bicycles and walk through the site to the other side which is incredibly dangerous,” she said.

Bollman said despite the challenges, work to shore up and secure the bank of the M4 was progressing well.

“Weather dependent, work should finish by the end of April in time for the Tour Durban cycle race. At this point, backfill operations are continuing. Workers are layering a terramesh system which reinforces soil slopes and embankments. They are also laying paragrids to stabilise the bank. They have done 12 rows of a mixture of the green terramesh (GTM), paragrids and backfilling of Berea red soil to stabilise the bank,” she said.
