CPF youth desk in need of volunteers

The youth desk was established to get the next generation actively involved in joining the fight against crime and building a culture of learning, tolerance and respect for all.

THE Durban North/Umhlanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) Youth Desk is looking for new volunteers to help spread its message and help tackle issues affecting the youth.

The youth desk, which was rekindled and re-launched last year was established as a sub-forum for the youth within the CPF with the primary aim of getting the next generation actively involved in joining the fight against crime and violence as well as to building a culture of learning, tolerance and respect for all.

Shannon Naylor chairperson of the youth desk, said their main aim was to spread the message to schools in the area.

“Besides creating awareness of social issues within the community we also want to introduce the youth to the police and bridge that gap of understanding. Each member of the Youth Desk has their own role and we work closely with the social crime prevention unit of the Durban North SAPS station. I think the idea behind the Youth Desk is fantastic and this forum is sorely needed because I think it’s important to have a platform for the youth,” Naylor explained.

Local resident, Naomi Seiti, who is the youth desk’s confidence coach said she her role within the organisation was self-positivism.

“So much of the problems facing the youth these days stems from self-esteem and confidence issues. So my aim is to bring out and encourage self-love and positive thinking. I feel every school we visit the learners are quite receptive to our message. Most importantly being part of this vibrant group of people is also a form of community service and giving back so that’s why I would encourage people to join,” she said.

Naylor said they were looking for volunteers between the ages of 16 and 35.

“We meet for an hour once a month to discuss campaigns and roles. We are ideally looking for young people who live in the area, who are vibrant and are hoping to serve their community for the better good. If anyone is interested I encourage them to visit our Facebook page under the same name or email me on shannon.naylor7@gmail.com if they are interested,” she said.
