Residents call for speed humps on Sackville Place

Residents of Sackville Place say the road is used as a thoroughfare by motorists trying to access Swapo Road (Broadway) without encountering any speed humps.

RESIDENTS living on Sackville Place in Durban North have implored the Ethekwini Traffic Authority (ETA) to look at implementing traffic calming measures to curb the speeding on the busy residential road. The call for speed humps comes after years of accidents, near-misses and a daily flouting of speed limits on the residential road.

Residents of Sackville Place say the road is used as a thoroughfare by motorists trying to access Swapo Road (Broadway) without encountering any speed humps.

The two other roads between them, St Andrews Drive and Balmoral Drive, have traffic calming measures leading motorists to choose Sackville Place as the quickest way to get to Broadway.

Residents have also asked the City to consider installing traffic lights at the intersections of Old Mill Way, Prospect Hall Road and Sackville Place due to the high number of accidents at the intersection.

Northglen News spoke to two residents, Terry Turner and Sarah Dawson who voiced their concerns over the current situation.

“I’ve seen drivers of all ages speeding down this road and it is particularly bad in the late afternoon and evenings. I’ve lived on the road for 34 years and I would say the problem has worsened in the past 18 months. It’s actually scary reversing out of our driveway because of the motorists speeding. We also feel traffic lights at the intersection of Old Mill Way and Prospect Hall Road need to be looked at urgently because of the number of accidents and deaths,” Turner explained.

Fellow resident, Dawson, concurred with Turner’s comments.

“We feel three speed humps would help curb speeding on Sackville Place and three more as the road becomes Hoylake Drive further down. I’ve lost a dog to a speeding motorist and my husband was involved in an accident while reversing out of our driveway which goes to show how bad the problem is. Motorists use our road to avoid the traffic on Adelaide Tambo Drive and Old Mill Way to access Swapo Road the quickest. I fear there is going to be another serious accident if this matter isn’t addressed soon,” she said.
