What Valentine’s Day means to a Durban North flower vendor

Celebrate the true meaning of love this Valentine's Day by spoiling your loved one and helping make a difference in the life of Durban North flower vendor, Lindokuhle Zulu.

FOR flower vendor, Lindokuhle Zulu, Valentine’s Day is a day to show love to his family as he tries to provide for his four-year-old daughter. The vendor boasts buckets of blooms on the corner of Blackburn Road and uMhlanga Rocks Drive.

“I love the nature of flowers. I am also a parent, I am also a loving person and I know that flowers are a way to express how you feel about your loved ones. You can make them happy with a gesture like this. I am here selling flowers because I know it’s going to help me be the good parent that my family wants me to be. Not all parents of my age do this,” he said.

Zulu (24) is working on commission for The Flower Centre and his roadside ‘store’ allows passing motorists to purchase flowers on the go, with a slip road for a quick and convenient pit stop.
“I thought this was a good place to sell flowers because this community is friendly and supportive,” said Zulu.

Owner of Flower Centre, Viniel Lallanchand said, “It’s a crazy day today. We have about 10 vendors in and around the Durban North area. We are trying to empower those who are unemployed.”

This is the third year that Zulu is selling flowers on Valentine’s Day, a job he found while searching for full time employment. While he is grateful for the temporary work, Zulu said he is looking for a full time job.

“I approached this company looking for a job and they gave me this opportunity. So this is what I’m doing to provide for my daughter. If anyone wants to help a guy get a decent job, please call me. I am willing to do anything decent,” he said.

So, if you are looking for a way to show your love this Valentine’s Day and help  Zulu at the same time, this is the perfect opportunity. He has buckets of bouquets, colourful, assorted roses and beautiful baskets, intricately arranged.
