23 arrested in Umhlanga Rocks Drive roadblock

The roadblock started at about 8pm on Sunday evening.

DURBAN North SAPS expressed shock over the arrest of 23 motorists charged with drunken driving on Sunday evening.

The motorists were arrested in a joint operation between Metro Police and the Durban North police station on Umhlanga Rocks Drive (going north) opposite the Durban North Fire Station.

Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS said the station arrested and charged more than 120 motorists for drunk driving in similar operations since January this year.

“We’ve often had roadblocks on the M4 but we feel Umhlanga Rocks Drive is also a main arterial route which drivers take chances on. We’ve had residents complain to us specifically about this and in the past when we’ve held roadblocks on the M4, drivers use Umhlanga Rocks Drive as a way to bypass our roadblocks due to warnings on social media.

“We are seeing a number of drivers still taking a chance and putting other motorists’ lives at risk by driving drunk. Being arrested for drunk driving is not a misdemeanour, it is a serious crime and a preventable choice. We have a zero tolerance approach for drunken driving, so appeals for leniency because some people view this as a ‘lesser crime’ are ridiculous,” he said.

Three motorists were also fined for traffic violations including driving without a license and driving an unlicensed vehicle.
