Spate of break-ins causes concern for Glenhills residents

In the past few months, there have been incidents reported on Ryde Place, Orthman Road and Terrence Place.

A SPATE of break-ins and petty thefts on three residential roads in Glenhills has caused great concern among residents. In the past few months, there have been incidents reported on Ryde Place, Orthman Road and Terrence Place.

All three roads are surrounded by dense forest which residents say the thieves are using to move through undetected.

The latest victim of a break-in was Carla Coetzee and her family who live on Orthman Road.

The suspects targeted the home while the family were out and cut through the perimeter hedge which is also topped with barbed wire. Once inside, the suspects broke a window leading into the home and it is believed they used bolt cutters to cut through the burglar guards which are built into the window frame.

They made off with a PS4, an iPad, a tablet, a laptop and several device charges before escaping over the fence.

“Of all the items the laptop had the most sentimental value because it had all my family photographs of my children and my husband. Sadly I don’t have it backed up anywhere. When we arrived home on the Friday evening the break-in occurred, I had this uneasy feeling when I walked into our yard. I noticed a large stick lying on the ground at the back of our property and I thought that was weird.

“It was only when I walked to see why the stick was there that I realised we’d been broken into. It is such an unnerving feeling and my children couldn’t sleep that night because of what had happened. This was definitely planned, they were obviously watching our daily routine from the bushes along Ryde Place, which border our property. We’ve lived in the area for 17 years and we’ve never had an incident but this whole thing has left us uneasy,” she said.

Coetzee said after speaking to local resident, Kerry Haylett (who has started a WhatsApp group for the three roads for crime alerts) she learnt there had been a spate of break-ins in the area.
