Effingham water leak angers councillor

According to ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh, the matter was brought to his attention more than four months ago.

RESIDENTS of Effingham are at their wit’s end to get the City to fix a prolonged water leak that has been flowing through the parking lot of the Firwood Road Library and pooling on Falkirk Avenue, directly in front of the library and pool complex.

According to ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh, the matter was brought to his attention more than four months ago.
However the problem has worsened over time with the steady flow of water increasing in intensity.

“I was at the library speaking to a resident about issues in the area and he brought this to my attention. At the time the water was flowing under the steps at the entrance of the Firwood Road pool and continuing through the parking lot and flowing into the stormwater drain on Falkirk Avenue. However, due to the sheer volume, the water has now begun pooling on Falkirk Avenue.

“There is a little section between the parking lot of the library and the pool where the water is steadily flowing downhill. There is also a portion of thick uncut grass which is stopping hundreds of litres of water from flowing into the properties in front of the library. This matter has been reported to the eThekwini Water and Sanitation department but I’ve had no response on the matter. It’s deeply frustrating as thousands of litres of water has been flowing through the parking lot for months,” he explained.

Maharajh fears the leak may worsen if the flow isn’t stopped soon.

“The leak has certainly worsened since it was brought to my attention. If there wasn’t a portion of overgrown grass in front of the stormwater drain where the water is flowing into, then the issue would be much worse. Already we’ve seen that water is pooling along Falkirk Avenue. There is at times also a foul smell coming from the water which is also concerning,” he said.
