Councillor calls for action on illegal dumping in Glenhills

According to Graham, the illegal dumping in the area is not only having an environmental impact but it is also having an effect on property prices in the area.

WARD councillor, Pete Graham, has called on the eThekwini Municipality to take urgent action over illegal dumping on Malacca Road, Ryde Place and Khabazela Drive.

Illegal dumping, particularly in Glenhills, has continued despite efforts to keep the area clean.

In 2015 the City spent more than a million Rand to erect a 1.5 metre high concrete palisade fence (topped with barbed wire) – spanning the length of Malacca Road and Ryde Place.

It was thought at the time the fence would help with security and illegal dumping at the time, however it has failed to hamper illegal dumping.

What is more, most of the illegal dumping takes place within 50 metres of the Malacca Road dump.

According to Graham, the dumping is not only having an environmental impact but it is also having an effect on property prices in the area.

“Some residents of Malacca Informal Settlement are partly to blame for the illegal dumping particularly at the intersection of Ryde Place and Malacca Road but so to are contractors and residents illegally dumping material along the road. There has been a call for the closure of the dump altogether from some residents as well. I’ve sent out a number of emails urging the City to do a clean-up of the areas affected.

“I will also be asking the City to look at one of the residents, who made suggestions to Northglen News about how the dump could be improved and perhaps upgraded in terms of operating times. The truth is illegal dumping has become endemic to the area and the ratepayers association and the CPF have done everything in their power to try and curb illegal dumping. CPF chairman, Robin Candy has even gone on to trace illegal dumpers and requested them to clean-up the rubbish they’ve dumped,” he said.
