Yousuf Deedat dies days after Verulam shooting

MUSLIM activist Yousuf Deedat, has died, just days after he was shot outside the Verulam Magistrate’s Court.

In a statement, his son, Raees Deedat, said his father passed away peacefully at St Anne’s Hospital in Pietemaritzburg on Friday afternoon.

According to Raees, his family and friends were at his bedside when he passed away.

His funeral will take place at Verulam Wick Street Mosque on Saturday morning.

The search for Deedat’s killer continues confirmed police. He was shot in the head while walking towards the Verulam court on Wednesday at about 8.30am.

Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa, said Deedat was expected to defend himself in a case scheduled at the Verulam Family Court.

“According to witnesses, Deedat was walking towards the court when he was approached by a man who drew a firearm and shot him once before fleeing the vicinity on foot. A security officer who witnessed the incident pursued the suspect who got into an awaiting white Mazda car on Groom Street and sped off,” said Balram.
