Sadness expressed over drowning at eMdloti Beach

Medics who were on standby on the beach declared the man deceased on scene.

THE eMdloti UIP has expressed its sadness over the drowning of a Verulam resident at main beach on Thursday evening.

The man was allegedly walking on the rocks just after 6.20pm on Thursday when he was swept out to sea by a strong rip tide.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesperson, Prem Balram, said their operations centre received multiple calls from onlookers requesting assistance for the victim.

“Upon arrival Search and Rescue divers entered the water and recovered the victim’s body. Medics who were on standby on the beach declared him deceased,” Balram said.

Terry Rens, manager of eMdloti UIP, also expressed her sadness over the drowning.

“It’s an unfortunate tragedy and we are all saddened by the death of the man. The UIP and residents offer their condolences to his family and friends. Throughout the festive season we’ve had a good track record thanks to the amazing work of the lifeguards on duty.

“My understanding with this incident is that the gentleman was swept off the rocks and pulled out to sea by a strong rip tide. Our festive management committee will be meeting soon and we will be motivating for the City to extend the lifeguard duty in terms of hours to perhaps prevent any tragedies from occurring,” she said.
