WATCH: Matrics celebrate at Northlands Girls’ High and Durban North College

Northlands Girl's High School matriculant, Varshuri Reddy was named Dux with seven distinctions.

THERE was much excitement as matriculants gathered at Northlands Girls’ High School  for their results on Wednesday. The school was  proud to announce that they had a 100 per cent pass rate.

“Our class of 2019 has made us proud,” said Kerran Backhouse, marketing and communications manager for the school.

Matriculant, Varshuri Reddy was named Dux with seven distinctions. “I’m ecstatic. I didn’t expect to do as well as I did,” she said.

The matriculant took advanced maths as an eighth subject, scoring a B.

Graduating with five distinctions each were : Kehshalia Govender, Taarikaa Moodley, Bianca Naidoo and Ria Naidoo. Five learners matriculated with four distinctions each: Seyanne Govender, Maseeha Nazeer, Dominique Pather, Yuvasta Ramdularay and Sonul Shanskreet.

Zara Brun was among the eight learners who matriculated with three distinctions each.

“We were well prepared by our teachers, so I felt organised,” she said.

“This year I am working for various promotional companies and I’ll be joining Greenpeace,” she added.

Also matriculating with three distinctions were: S’Nenhlanhla Mncwango, Caitlin Naicker, Runendo Nyamunda, Darmini Pillay, Toyah-Lee Ramsay, Simriti Singh and Nina Welthagen.

“Well done to all our learners, their outstanding achievements are testament to their hard work and perseverance over the past five years,” concluded Backhouse.

Durban North College

Spirits were high at Durban North College,  as matriculants collected their results.

“Our top learner Shweta Harilal is not only the top learner in the Umlazi District but also number one in KwaZulu-Natal. She had an aggregate of 95.43 per cent,” said Natasja Pretorious, marketing manager for the school.

Another high achiever from the school, Dawid Cronjé was placed third in the Umlazi District and tied  for ninth spot in KZN.

“Dawid has also received the highest math mark in Umlazi with 98 per cent. His aggregate is 94.86 per cent,” she said.

The school’s overall pass rate was also high, said Pretorious.

“Durban North College had 40 learners with a Bachelor’s pass and 19 with a Diploma. Our pass rate is 98.44 percent,” she said.

Nadia Waters was among those to achieve a bachelors pass.

“I’m quite happy with my results, I got one distinction, an ‘A’ for Afrikaans,” she said.

The matriculant sets off to Johannesburg to study drama at Wits University this year.

Offering advice to the class of 2020, Waters said: “Just do your best, try your hardest and study as you have before and if you haven’t been studying then start studying because it is a little bit difficult.”
