BOOKWORMS got more than they bargained for when a snake slithered across the children’s books at Glenashley Library on Monday morning.
Snake expert, Jason Arnold swooped in to identify the snake at around 9.30am.
“When a snake finds its way into a public library, it can cause quite a stir. Fortunately it turned out to be a totally harmless Eastern Natal Green Snake,” he said.
Arnold thinks the snake found its way inside through a small hole in the wall at ground level where the air conditioning pipes come through the wall.
“There were no windows open, I realised it must have had another way to get in,” he said.
He filled the hole with a piece of newspaper as a temporary solution.
“Apparently it’s not first snake they’ve had in the library, but I think their problem is solved now with the whole being blocked,” he said.

Arnold said reports of snake sightings have flooded in over the festive period.
“I’ve been getting a lot of queries, there have been lots of snakes around. A few dogs were bitten and lots of people sent pictures for snake identification,” he said.

Of the snakes he identified, most were Stiletto snakes, which deliver a “nasty bite.”
