2020 community beach clean-ups kick off this weekend
The clean up forms part of KZN Beach Clean Up's efforts to reduce single-use waste.
With the summer rains around the corner, and the festive season behind us, Durban environmental groups are wasting no time and are already planning to tackle the scourge of plastic along Durban’s beaches.
Once such organisation is KZNBeach Clean Up which will will host their first clean-up for 2020 on Saturday, 11 January from 8am until 10am at Battery Beach Road in Durban.
The event was shared on their Facebook page.
“Meet us on the beach in front of Pirates Lifesaving Club. As part of our efforts to reduce single-use waste, please bring reusable gloves,” read the post.
Durban North resident, Lindsay Hopkins from Waste Action Tribe said they will be attending the clean-up.
She also highlighted the importance of using reusable bags to collect litter to avoid adding to the problem with excessive use of plastic litter bags.

Cameron Service of The Litterboom Project said clean-up efforts will be necessary going forward in 2020.
“The summer rains still lie ahead, so people should get into a habit of taking a bag down when they are on their local beaches and consistently do their bit in 2020,” he said.
The eThekwini Municipality said an additional 200 temporary litter-pickers were employed by the city and officials from Durban Solid Waste worked 24-hours a day during the festive period.
