Umhlanga’s beach festival goes swimmingly

One of the charitable events and a highlight of the festival was Carol's under the Stars at Granada Square where presents were collected for underprivileged children in the community.

WITH good weather, family fun, and a spirit of giving, it was a favourable festive season on the uMhlanga coastline and this year’s Umhlanga Summer Festival was the best yest, said Peter Rose, Umhlanga Tourism’s chairman of 14 years.

The festival which has been running for more than 10 years takes place annually at uMhlanga’s Main Beach. In the 2019 season the festival took place from 14 to 23 December with plenty of fun activities for the whole family.

“The festival was a great success, it was the best ever. On the charity side we collected more money for charity than ever before. That’s one of the main ways that I judge the success of the festival. We try to share with the less fortunate. The LIV Village will be a recipient of some of our charity,” he said.

One of the charitable events and a highlight of the festival was Carol’s under the Stars at Granada Square on Thursday, 19 December.

“It was a lovely evening, thank goodness it didn’t rain. We collected the most presents that we ever have for underprivileged children in our community. There were 12 black bags of presents and a record no of toys,” he said.

The gifts were distributed by the Rotary Club of Umhlanga to underprivileged children, including those from single parent households.

Swimmers were safe in the uMhlanga surf and aside from a few windy days, the festive season was idyllic on the uMhlanga coastline, said Rose.

“We didn’t have one hiccup. Nobody drowned, nobody needed rescuing. The children enjoyed themselves. The beaches were crowded and the weather was good except for a bit of wind on some days,” he said.

The Miss and Mr uMhlanga pageant on Saturday, 21 November was another highlight of the festival and the Santa Clause that arrived on the stage was sensational, concluded Rose.
