Little green fingers grow a green future

This is the estate's first ever children's community gardens.

THE Mount Edgecombe Country Club Estate launched the Little Green Fingers Garden recently in partnership with Engen Mount Edgecombe. This is the estate’s first ever children’s community gardens.

Head of estate, Reeva Mc Murtrie was at the launch.

“I think this is an awesome initiative, it’s one of the many lifestyle offerings for the estate. I think it’s appropriate because it will appeal to the younger families that are residing on the estate. It’s something to do in the afternoon. It’s great to form partnerships like this,” she said.

Speaking at the launch, Ayanda Duma, learning environment manager for the estate said the initiative aims to educate children on the estate about how to grow food.

“Usually in our day to day life, we just go to a local supermarket and buy food, so we want to create a change for the new generation and bring back what our grandmothers used to do-working with our hands and getting dirty. Childhood is all about getting dirty. Starting today, we have a schedule of what to plant and when to plant. We are going to be educating the children about what season is for what crop. We are going to use the produce for our restaurant. When it’s time for harvest, we will gather celery, spinach, rocket for a soup and our chef will be sharing a recipe that our mom’s can also use,” she said.

Estate resident Trishana Patell was at the launch with her daughter, Kimaya.

“I’m very excited about it. This is a fantastic idea for our children, they don’t always get to learn about gardening and this way they can learn about it,” she said.
Several youngsters turned up at the launch to plant the very first plants in the brand new garden.
