Beloved principal bids farewell to DNC

The Durban North resident who recently retired, dedicated more than 30 years to the school.

THERE was a sombre mood around Durban North College (DNC) as learners and staff bid farewell to beloved principal, Maryna Höbel. The Durban North resident who recently retired, dedicated more than 30 years to the school she loved so much and was principal of the school for 12 years.

She joined the school in 1982 transferring from Werda School and teaching accounting to high school learners.

“I’ve been with DNC for 38 years and it has been incredibly tough saying goodbye. The staff threw me a farewell dinner and it was very hard to keep my emotions in check. The staff, learners and the school governing body have all been fantastic with their support and I couldn’t have done it without them. I’ve been privileged to be part of the school’s growth and expansion and I’m hoping Durban North College will grow from strength to strength under the new principal when they are appointed, ” Höbel said.

Höbel said one of her key leadership qualities was having an open-door policy for both staff and learners.

“It may seem insignificant but having that open-door policy made a huge impact especially for some learners who needed that extra help. I often bump into old learners who thank me for what I did in giving them the support and most importantly hearing them out. That is always a fulfilling feeling especially seeing how everyone appreciated it,” she said.

Höbel said she will continue to support the school in its ventures and journey going forward.

“The school turns 50 next year and I hope to be part of their celebrations but wherever I may be I will always support Durban North College,” she said.

Höbel will now be moving back to Gauteng to be with her family and says her plans include travelling around South Africa and walking a section of the Camino de Santiago.
