Cyclists rally behind Saint Giles

The event was the brainchild of the Cycle Specialists Cycling Club and Leonard Arjunun, manager of Pick n Pay Hyper By The Sea.

CYCLISTS from all over Durban recently raised R20 000 for the Saint Giles Durban, a non profit organisation for the disabled.

The ride, organised by Pick n Pay Hyper By The Sea and local cyclists, Angus Lambert and Neil Abbott, saw 170 riders cycle from uMhlanga to eMdloti as well as Westbrook.

The event was the brainchild of the Cycle Specialists Cycling Club and Leonard Arjunun, manager of Pick n Pay Hyper By The Sea.

“I’m also a cyclist and a member of Cycle Specialists Cycling Club so when Neil and Angus spoke about trying to get more cycling clubs and residents behind the fundraiser we decided to step in. Last year Neil had begun monthly rides to raise funds for the organisation and we thought why not begin something similar and give back to a deserving charity. I must say I was overwhelmed with the number of people who showed up and participated. The commitment of the different cycling clubs was tremendous and I’d like to thank all those who participated and donated to such a worthy cause,” he explained.

Though it has not been confirmed yet, Arjunun said the club and Pick n Pay were in talks about hosting a similar charity ride every three months.

Managing director of Saint Giles Durban, Terry Rennie, said he was blown away by the support of all those involved.

“We are blown away by the support by everyone involved. As a non-profit organisation, Saint Giles Durban relies on donations like this to keep going. We are so grateful to all those who took the time out to donate to the cause and we’d like to thank all of them for opening their hearts and rallying behind us,” Rennie said.
