City of Durban to investigate fraud and corruption

The head of the City Integrity and Investigating Unit said whistle-blowers are the critical stakeholders in the fight against fraud and corruption.

HEAD of the City Integrity and Investigating Unit for the eThekwini Municipality Mbuso Ngcobo said they would root out fraud and corruption without fear or favour.

“EThekwini Municipality is not a corrupt organisation,” Ngcobo said in a statement following the Fraud and Corruption Awareness Seminar held recently at the Durban Exhibition Centre.

“If there is fraud and corruption being identified in the municipality, it is just those elements or individuals caught who are probably corrupt, not eThekwini Municipality as an organisation,” he said.

Ngcobo called on everyone to support efforts to eradicate fraud and corruption, to lead by example and encourage corrective actions against corrupt behaviours.

“Fighting fraud and corruption is everyone’s business. Let us work together to fight, eradicate it and make a better South Africa,” he said.

He also called for the protection of whistle-blowers as critical stakeholders to fight corruption and fraud.

“We also have to think and make decisions about practical mechanisms that can be employed to protect the whistle-blowers. They are the critical stakeholders in the fight against fraud and corruption, but yet they are very vulnerable,” he said.

Ngcobo emphasised that the municipality has zero tolerance towards fraud and corruption and said this is boldly documented on council policy.
