Three in serious condition after exposure to noxious fumes in uMhlanga

The workers were all placed on mechanical ventilators.

THREE men have been rushed through to various hospitals after being exposed to noxious fumes in an underground tank of an uMhlanga car dealership on Millennium Boulevard.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst, the men, who were contractors, were tasked with cleaning an underground tanker (catchment tank) which collects oil and diesel at the dealership.

“The underground tank is regularly cleaned out and three workers were overcome by carbon monoxide gas. Rescuers, wearing breathing apparatus had to climb down into the tank to rescue the men who had all passed out. The three men were brought to the surface and had to be resuscitated by advanced paramedic assistance due to the severity of their breathing difficulties,” Herbst explained.

Several rescue personnel, including the Fire Department, Metro Search & Rescue, Crisis Medical, IPSS and Rescue Care Paramedics were in attendance.

“The three workers are in a serious conditions and have been transported to various hospitals. The workers had to be put on to mechanical ventilators,” explained Crisis Medical spokesperson, Kyle van Reenen.
