Progress being made on M4 repairs

On Sunday workers had dug up a large section of the M4 on either side of the stormwater pipe where the road had collapsed.

PROGRESS is being made on repairs to the M4 Ruth First Highway following a partial collapse almost two weeks ago due to heavy rains. The subsequent mudslide also affected the Umhlanga Cabanas holiday resort located directly below the busy highway.

On Sunday workers had dug up a large section of the M4 on either side of the stormwater pipe where the road had collapsed.

While the Department of Transport are yet to issue a statement despite repeated attempts by the Northglen News for an update, eThekwini Metro spokesperson, Senior Superintendent, Parboo Sewpersad said he was told the repairs would take a little more than four weeks.

“I’ve been in constant communication with senior officials within the Department of Transport. A contractor has been appointed to carry out repair work and they also have the go ahead to carry out weekend and night time work. It’s difficult to give a timeframe for the repair work but again indications are the work is likely to take several weeks. The contractors and the City are aware of the influx of motorists who will be travelling down the north coast for the festive season.

“When assessments were being carried out on the highway a few weeks ago, the estimated repair work would take a little over four weeks to complete. Due to the highway’s closure we’ve seen a substantial increase in traffic with motorists using the N2 between Sibaya and uMhlanga. We are again urging motorists to be patient and allow for extra travel time especially during peak hour traffic,” Sewperad said.

Ward councillor for the area, Nicole Bollman, said she has received suggestions from local residents to move the cement barriers, currently placed across the M4 (at the uMhlanga village off-ramp) further back.

“Several residents have suggested the City and the Department of Transport move the cement barrier just after the Portland Drive turnoff going north which could help alleviate the traffic build up on the M4,” she said.
