M4 road collapse affects uMhlanga resort

The car park was the worst hit, with the boundary fence and part of the car park collapsing.

A PORTION of the M4 roadway that was washed away last week in a mudslide caused by heavy rains has also affected the Umhlanga Cabanas holiday resort located directly below the busy highway.

Due to the collapsed highway, a deluge of sand and water came through and damaged the resort’s perimeter fence explained resort manager, Sheldon English.

“The car park was the worst hit, with the boundary fence and part of the car park collapsing. We are still waiting for that assessment as to cost. There was also a lot of damage to municipal structures as well. We had to close off some units due to water damage but it’s minor and all that’s needed is a big clean-up which we have already started. Access and parking into the resort has been affected but we have chatted to our neighbouring resorts about assisting with parking space,” he said.

English said the resort wanted to assure guests that the resort was operating as normal while repair work was being carried out.

“We would like to assure our guests that it’s business as usual and if they were among those affected by the unit closures,” he said.

“The North Coast community has rallied to help each other and we are proud to be part of this effort to help rebuild hopefully in time to welcome this season’s visitors to our beautiful coast.”
