Feed the furkids with SPCA’s ‘Jingle Bowls’ campaign

The SPCA anticipates 1 500 stray, unwanted and abandoned pets will be dumped at their doors during the festive season.

WITH the festive season around the corner, the Durban & Coast SPCA is preparing for an influx of animals. To cope with the many mouths they will have to feed, they are launching their ‘Jingle Bowls’ campaign, a drive to collect pet food to see them through.

“We will hear the merry jingle of about 100 kilograms of dog and cat pellets being poured into food bowls every single day as the festive season draws near,” said Tanya Fleischer, marketing manager for the SPCA.

SPCA inspectors will be on duty round the clock to rescue abandoned and ill-treated animals during the festive season.

“Christmas is coming and that can only mean one thing at the SPCA – hundreds of more mouths to feed. This is the busiest time of the year for us. From now until mid-January, around 1 500 stray, unwanted and abandoned pets will be dumped here by their uncaring owners. Our hungry orphans munch their way through more than 10 eight kg bags of food every day as well as umpteen cartons of canned food and pouch meals. Food isn’t just a necessity – it means comfort and reassurance to a frightened, bewildered dog or cat that suddenly finds itself in a strange place, separated from a beloved owner and a home that should have been theirs for life. Your donation to help keep the food bowls ‘jingling’ all through the holidays doesn’t just feed a dog or cat. It helps restore their trust in the human race too,” said Fleischer.

Many pets are left behind while their owners go on vacation during the festive season, she added.

“Even after all the Christmases we’ve experienced, we are still shocked at the way people treat pets who have been part of their family for years. Our hearts break for the little dog left all alone at home when his owners go off on holiday, ” she said.

Pet food donations can be delivered to the SPCA on 2 Willowfield Crescent in Springfield Park. Financial donations can be made online at www.spcadbn.org.za.
